The Gentle

XÙN
Gentle penetration · Persistent diffusion · Lose neither funds nor axe
Upper · Xun ☴ Wind / Lower · Xun ☴ Wind

Judgment

— I Ching · classical

小亨,利有攸往,利见大人。

Modest success is available through gentle, gradual influence. It favors moving forward, and favors seeking counsel from someone of real stature.

Image

— Great Image

随风,巽,君子以申命行事。

One current of wind follows right behind another: this is the picture of Gentle Penetration. Watching it, a person of quality sends instructions out and follows through on what needs doing.

Six Lines

— Bottom to top

Initial Six · 初六 ⚋ yin
进退,利武人之贞。
Wavering between moving ahead and pulling back, the disciplined resolve of a soldier is what serves best here.
Vacillating advance and retreat — only the steadfastness of a warrior breaks the indecision.
Nine in the second · 九二 ⚊ yang
巽在床下,用史巫纷若,吉,无咎。
Bowing low, humbling yourself even beneath the bed, and calling on ritual specialists and diviners in numbers -- this brings good fortune, with nothing to fault.
Kneels in deepest humility (xun zai chuang xia); uses sincere ritual and intermediaries in profusion; pierces the upper layer of doubt. Fortune, no blame.
Nine in the third · 九三 ⚊ yang
频巽,吝。
Bowing and yielding over and over without it ever quite landing brings its own quiet humiliation.
Repeatedly bowing without effect (pin xun); the body language of indecision — humiliating.
Six in the fourth · 六四 ⚋ yin
悔亡,田获三品。
Whatever regret there was lifts -- like a hunt that comes home with three different kinds of game.
Regret gone; in the hunt, three types of prey gained — diligent gentleness yields concrete results.
Nine in the fifth · 九五 ⚊ yang
贞吉,悔亡,无不利。无初有终。先庚三日,后庚三日,吉。
Holding steady brings good fortune, and whatever regret there was lifts -- nothing here works against you. It may start rough, but it finishes well: study the change carefully for three days beforehand, and three days after, and the outcome is good.
Steadfast — fortune; no regret; nothing fails. Beginnings rough, endings well; three days of warning before the decree, three days of tracking after. Fortune.
Nine at the top · 上九 ⚊ yang
巽在床下,丧其资斧,贞凶。
Submitting so completely you're bowing beneath the bed itself -- you lose both your resources and the means to defend them. Holding rigidly to this course brings misfortune.
Submission too deep — loses both his goods and his protective weapon (sang qi zi fu). Persistence here is dangerous.

Modern Readings

— Interdisciplinary

Career & Management

Cultural osmosis, refined operations, market penetration strategy. Management directives must be 'repeated like the wind'; but a leader who is purely yielding loses both authority and resources.

Psychology & Cognition

Influence others through subtle, sustained gentleness (nonviolent communication). Beware excessive softness that erases your boundary — losing 'zi fu' (resource and protective edge) is the danger at the top.

Decision Guidance

Three days before and three days after every major decree (xian geng san ri, hou geng san ri). Soft penetration; firm core. Never sleep under the bed losing both wealth and weapon (line 6).

Integrated Reading

— Structure · timing · relations

The Gentle places The Gentle / Wind, Wood above The Gentle / Wind, Wood. Read the lower trigram as the emerging ground and the upper trigram as the field, pressure, or constraint it must answer. The core theme is Gentle penetration · Persistent diffusion · Lose neither funds nor axe. Relations: the opposite hexagram shows the shadow/complement (The Arousing); the inverse shows the other-side view (The Joyous); the nuclear hexagram shows the hidden internal mechanism (Opposition).

Line Path

Line path: Initial Six → Nine in the second → Nine in the third → Six in the fourth → Nine in the fifth → Nine at the top. Read from bottom to top to see how the situation emerges, develops, crosses thresholds, and resolves.

Reflection Prompt

Am I acting from the proper position of The Gentle, or am I being pulled by yielding without decision? What is the smallest reversible next move that respects the timing?

Western Parallels

— Cross-cultural

Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication; Cialdini on the power of consistency and small commitments; soft-power doctrine (Joseph Nye); the marketing 'rule of seven' (a message must be repeated to land).
