The Corners of the Mouth

Nourishment · Input-output management · What you consume
Upper · Gen ☶ Mountain / Lower · Zhen ☳ Thunder

Judgment

— I Ching · classical

Holding to what is right brings good fortune. Watch closely how nourishment is provided, and how each person goes about earning their own sustenance.

Image

— Great Image

Thunder stirs at the foot of the mountain: this is Nourishment. Watching it, a person of real character weighs their words carefully and keeps their eating and drinking in moderation.

Six Lines

— Bottom to top

Setting aside your own sacred tortoise to stare enviously at what fills someone else's mouth -- misfortune follows.
Abandoning your real core asset (the magical tortoise) to gawk at someone else's wealth and bubbles — misfortune.
Six in the second · 六二 ⚋ yin
Reaching upward for sustenance instead of following the proper order, seeking it instead from the high ground -- keep this up and misfortune follows.
Asking for nourishment in the wrong direction (downward instead of from the proper source) violates the natural order; persistence is misfortune.
Six in the third · 六三 ⚋ yin
Rejecting proper nourishment altogether -- holding to this brings misfortune, and even ten years won't undo it. There's no upside to this path.
Against the natural way of nourishment. A long fast from this path — ten years — is required.
Six in the fourth · 六四 ⚋ yin
Reaching upward for what's needed brings good fortune here -- watching intently, hungry like a tiger fixed on its prey. No fault in that intensity.
Reaching up for nourishment is sometimes proper when paired with the fierce focus of the tiger — no blame.
Six in the fifth · 六五 ⚋ yin
Straying from the normal order -- staying settled and steady still brings good fortune, but this isn't the moment to cross the great river.
Unable to nourish oneself, must rely on others — hold integrity, stay put, do not undertake great ventures.
Nine at the top · 上九 ⚊ yang
Becoming the very source others draw nourishment from -- staying alert to the weight of that role brings good fortune, and even crossing the great river is favorable now.
Becoming the source from which all are fed. Dangerous responsibility; carried with awareness, it crosses the great water.

Modern Readings

— Interdisciplinary

Career & Management

Compensation design, wellness industry, restructuring of core business. Audit the corporate 'metabolism' — what does the firm consume, what does it produce?

Psychology & Cognition

'Disease enters through the mouth, disaster issues from the mouth.' Manage information intake strictly (no junk media); manage financial outflow; tend body and emotion.

Decision Guidance

Watch what you swallow — informationally, financially, socially. Do not abandon your own treasures to envy others' bubbles.

Integrated Reading

— Structure · timing · relations

The Corners of the Mouth places Keeping Still / Mountain above The Arousing / Thunder. Read the lower trigram as the emerging ground and the upper trigram as the field, pressure, or constraint it must answer. The core theme is Nourishment · Input-output management · What you consume. Relations: the opposite hexagram shows the shadow/complement (Preponderance of the Great); the inverse shows the other-side view (The Corners of the Mouth); the nuclear hexagram shows the hidden internal mechanism (The Receptive).

Line Path

Line path: Initial Nine → Six in the second → Six in the third → Six in the fourth → Six in the fifth → Nine at the top. Read from bottom to top to see how the situation emerges, develops, crosses thresholds, and resolves.

Reflection Prompt

Am I acting from the proper position of The Corners of the Mouth, or am I being pulled by nourishing with impure speech or inputs? What is the smallest reversible next move that respects the timing?
